Paolo Soleri (Italian/American, 1919-2013), Five Arcosanti Bronze Bells

circa 1960, cast and patinated bronze, each with geometric cast bronze hinged links, various shaped bells with abstract geometric raised motifs and artist cypher, tapered clappers with triangular copper sheet metal wind catches.

Paolo Soleri's wind bells are handcrafted and known for their unique sound and design; produced at Cosanti and Arcosanti, his architectural and urban design projects in Arizona. Soleri, an Italian-born architect, developed the concept of "arcology," blending architecture and ecology, and his bells are a physical manifestation of this philosophy. The bells are made using a lost-styrofoam casting method, where molten bronze is poured into sand molds, and then finished with a patina bath to create unique markings. Originally the proceeds from bell sales supported The Cosanti Foundation, which furthers Soleri's work in urban design and ecological principles.
