Meiji period (1868-1912), a near pair of Japanese Satsuma porcelain floor vases with flared rims and tapered body, hand-painted and gilt decoration with figural scenes of Samurai, nobles, scholars, and courtesans set with a mountainous landscape, both with high-relief dragon handles holding tied tassels, both unmarked.

Larger Vase 45 x 21 x 18 in.

The taller with crack and associated restoration to shoulder (likely occurred during firing process), small losses to brows of both dragon handles, small chip to underside of rim; the shorter with hairline and associated fleabites to wrap rim, scattered small losses to four dragon handles, one handle with loss to ring and another with break and repair to ring, hairlines to base wrapping to underside;
both with hairlines, possible repairs, and previous auction labels to underside, scattered small areas of gilt rubbing and loss (mainly to rims and handles), overall toned crazing consistent with age.
