Mitchell is Carteret County's oldest known and most celebrated carver. His decoys have international acclaim. Like many gifted artists, Mitchell was somewhat eccentric and was known for having a furious temper; however, he was a perfectionist which is evident in his work. This example is in Henry Murphy gunning paint.
