Born in Shanghai in 1942, Wang Dawen apprenticed under several notable artists, learning landscape painting and seal carving from Qian Shoutie and bird and flower painting from Tang Yun.In 1964 Wang graduated from the Shanghai Painting Institute, and further experimented with her painting style learning from both Fan Shaoyun and Cheng Shifa. She taught at the Shanghai Painting Institute from 1964 - 1981. After emigrating to the USA in 1981, Wang gave lectures at New York State University and Dallas University to name but a few, and received the 53rd New York Douglaston Folk Art Prize.
