Lot Details & Additional Photographs
A rare view of Union officers and their civilian colleagues posing in front of New Bern's Sanitary Commission building. The organization promoted the health and well-being of Union soldiers. The mount's reverse is pencil identified and dated 1864. The New Bern location is verified by another view of the building, archived at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. The UNC image is credited to O.J. Smith, Union Photograph Rooms, New Bern, claiming the scene is "on the east side of Middle Street between Pollock and South Front Street."

8 x 10 in.

The capture of New Bern by federal forces in 1862 became a permanent occupation that would last until war's end.

Excellent contrasts and details.
