Circa 1870s, parcel gilt, marked "302 / English Sterling" to underside, matte finish to interior well, oblong form with calla lily mounts to each end, raised on a conforming base with four bracket feet and featuring a foliate and anthemion motif, period monogram "KLM" to one side.

John R. Wendt was one of the greatest American silversmiths of the late 19th century. Born in Germany, Wendt immigrated to the United States around 1848 and established himself in Boston before moving his operations to New York. His work was particularly noted for its refined craftsmanship and artistic patterns, often blending neoclassical and naturalistic motifs. Wendt collaborated with several leading retailers, most famously Tiffany & Co. and Ball, Black & Co.
