James Reynolds Carlisle (1886-1962) was born in Ashland, Kentucky to a skilled railroad carpenter. As a young man Carlisle began experimenting with violin construction and varnishes, becoming quite the skilled luthier. In addition to his own signed work, Carlisle made professional and student violins for the famed Wurlitzer Company of Cincinnati. Today instruments bearing Carlisle's name are prized among players and collectors.
Some small dings and play wear as expected; the violin's bridge, tailpiece and chin rest are replacements.
