Lot Details & Additional Photographs
20th century, celadon glaze molded with floral decoration, the trick cup with a rooster in high relief to center of cup that extends upwards and visible above the rim, a hole to underside and at base of rooster, two impressed marks to underside, comes together with a carved wood stand.

Cup 4 1/2 x 3 5/8 in.

These trick cups are based on the Japanese philosophy of hara hachi bu. It encourages people to eat or drink only until you are 80% full. Thus, when filled below or up to 80%, the cup will retain liquid; however, if you fill the cup above 80%, the siphon effect is triggered and the liquid will flow through the hole at the bottom.

Good estate condition.
