James Emmons Spear was born in 1817. He was active as a silversmith, jeweler, watchmaker, and retailer in Charleston, South Carolina circa 1846 to 1871. He had a partnership with J. Charles Wood under the name of Spear & Co. from 1849-1850. He died in Charleston in 1871.
