Meiji period (1868-1912), porcelain hand painted in polychrome enamels and gold, the body decorated on one side with a gathering of Chinese nobility in a lavish villa with graceful peony blossoms and the other side with a serene landscape of birds and flowers, the body is flanked by black and gold phoenix head handles and raised up on three similarly patterned feet, the fitted cover is surmounted with two fans, the underside of the cover painted with Japanese symbols, ornate gold and iron red borders cover the remainder of the vessel and cover, signed to the underside in iron red 日本横濱井村製 (made by Imura in Yokohama Japan).
