19th century, a Taiwanese
kanepochi shaman’s box, decorated with mother of pearl in sun or eye patterns, seals on either side of the box, with woven strings and cloth pouch to interior, these boxes classically feature “eyes” to ward off evil and serve as protection against malevolent spirits.
Box 3 1/4 x 5 x 1 1/2 in.
Collection of Mr. John Sylvester, Jr. A few minor nicks and paint chips to wood; some minute losses and cracking to mother of pearl; wear to cloth and string.
