The Munnerlyn family originated in the Charleston and Georgetown regions of South Carolina and rose to prominence as part of the expanding Southern planter class in the early to mid-19th century. In the 1830s, Charles Lewis Munnerlyn and his wife, Hannah White Shackelford Munnerlyn, moved their household from South Carolina to Florida and then to Decatur County, Georgia, where they established the Refuge plantation along the Flint River. Their son, Charles James Munnerlyn, born in 1822, later became a lawyer, planter, and Confederate congressman. Many relatives, such as Rebecca W. Munnerlyn, remained in South Carolina, while others established roots in Georgia and Florida.
