Lot Details & Additional Photographs
Attributed to Elkington & Co., Birmingham, England, circa 1840s, the engraved well and sides ornately decorated with national plants of the British Isles including the English rose, Welsh leek, Scottish thistle, and the Irish shamrock, among gothic motifs in high relief, and naturalistic vine handles, centering a coat of arms, with history affixed to the underside.
Affixed to the verso is an article describing the history of the piece: "Davidson College has always been a special place to Mrs. Helen Bailey Olering. It was from here that her father, Joseph A Bailey, graduated in 1883. In the belief that Davidson helped him become a "truly educated man" she has given generously to the College in his memory.
Most recently, she donated this large silver butler's tray, believed to have been crafted in Ireland around 1830. The design includes the national plants of all four parts of the British Isles- the English rose, Welsh leek, Scottish heather, and Irish shamrock.
Very good condition, surface scratches to the well.
