Dedy Sufriadi, from Palembang, Southern Sumatra, is an Indonesian painter who studied at the Indonesian Institute of the Arts (ISI) in Yogyakarta, earning both his undergraduate and Master’s degrees. He began painting seriously at age 15, and his work has been deeply influenced by existential philosophy and his lifelong passion for reading. In his mature work, as seen here, he employs text in a way analogous to how abstract expressionists use color and line. While drawing inspiration from artists such as Cy Twombly, Gerhard Richter, and Jean-Michel Basquiat, Dedy maintains a distinct voice, exploring contemporary socio-political themes through a visual language crafted for a global audience.
