19th century, opaque watercolor and gold, this finely depicted devotional painting shows Krishna engaged in the celestial dance, rasa lila, with the gopis described in the Bhagavata Purana, he is depicted dancing beneath a luminous full moon against a deep indigo sky scattered with stars, dancing in a circular formation with adoring cowherd maidens, while in the center he stands radiant, the scene is framed by lotus blossoms emerging from a darkened waterscape, bordered by an ornamental border of repeating white blossoms set against olive and black grounds, reinforcing the courtly refinement of the scene, the painting is presented under glass in a frame.

Frame dimensions 52 1/2 x 35 x 1 1/2 in.
