Matthew Cluff was active in Norfolk, Virginia from 1803 to 1816 and Elizabeth City, North Carolina from 1817 to 1819. He had a partnership by the name Ott & Cluff in Norfolk from 1803-1806. The coffin-end shaped handle was popular circa 1800, dating this piece from his early time in Norfolk.
