Lot Details & Additional Photographs
Mid-20th century, of irregular cylindrical form carved in an imitation of a gnarled tree trunk, the exterior worked in high relief to emphasize swirling knots and naturalistic burl formations, the surface finished in a dark stain or lacquer with warm brown undertones, with an uneven rim following the organic contours of the wood, the flat base shows the natural grain.

16 1/2 x 6 3/4 x 6 in.

A sculptural interpretation of the traditional scholar’s brush pot, reflecting the enduring appeal of rootwood forms in Chinese decorative arts.

Good estate condition; break with loss to rim; scattered surface stress cracks to wood; general wear.
