The lot includes (15) earthenware plates with transferware decoration designed by Lionel Edwards, each plate with individual scene, each marked to underside, including (7) plates (nos. 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, 8 and 10) (10 in. diameter) and (8) bread plates (nos. 4a, 6a - 12a) (6 1/4 in. diameter). Included with the lot are six hand-blown glasses with hand-painted fox hunt related animals, unsigned.
Private Collection from an Equestrian Farm, Moore County, North Carolina Lionel Dalhousie Robertson Edwards, RI (1878–1966) stands as one of the foremost British sporting artists of the twentieth century, ranked second only to Sir Alfred Munnings as the most important sporting artist of the hunting field of the first half of the twentieth century.
These plates were produced solely for retail at Soane & Smith, a high-end china and glass retailer at 462 Oxford Street in London.
