Vasa Mihich, also known simply as VASA, is a conceptual artist, painter, and sculptor whose work is characterized by his knowledge and experimentation with color theory. He is best known for his vibrant acrylic sculptures.
VASA was born in Yugoslavia in 1933. He spent his early years in various art academies in Belgrade, eventually becoming a faculty member at the University of Belgrade in 1956. VASA immigrated to California in 1960 and began teaching at UCLA shortly after. His work has centered on understanding the intersection of light and color, especially when used in the creation of three-dimensional objects.
His fame developed in earnest in January 1966, when he was one of the featured artists for the exhibit, “American Sculptures of the Sixties” at the Los Angeles County Art Museum. While his process has remained the same, the almost infinite use of color and combinations have allowed VASA continue exploring and experimenting in different styles.
He has exhibited at the Denver Art Museum, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium in Brussels, and the San Diego Museum of Art.
