His photographs capture everyday scenes with a quiet precision, as seen in notable series like Paterson and Hometowns.

Tice was a founder of the influential Witkin Gallery, one of the first galleries dedicated exclusively to fine art photography. His photographs are held in major collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Art Institute of Chicago; the J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles; and many others.
