The Collection of Laura Sawtell Palmer, Atlanta, Georgia Laura Sawtell Palmer descended from a prominent Georgia landowning family and was married to Charles Forrest Palmer in 1918. Her father, Thomas Roberds Sawtell, held extensive land across Georgia, particularly near the Florida border, and the family lived in a notable mansion at 1600 Peachtree Street in Atlanta, that no longer stands today.
Laura's husband Charles Forrest Palmer developed Techwood Homes in Atlanta, Georgia, the first public housing project in the United States. Her husband later served under President Franklin D. Roosevelt as Defense Housing Coordinator, helping oversee housing efforts for workers during World War II.
