This important ruddy and a couple rig mates were once published as the work of Bob Morse. The Morse family and distinctive chine line have both pointed to Rufus Roberts as the maker. Rufus Roberts made most of his decoys as a young man. He made redheads, canvasbacks, ruddy ducks, and black heads. There are less than six known surviving ruddy ducks.
