John Wallace, the son of Christopher Thomas Salter and Matilda Styron Salter, was born and reared on Portsmouth Island. One of nice children, he was thirteen when his father died. John Wallace went to work oystering, fishing, and hunting. He was a market hunter, and according to his son Ben, he shipped geese, brant, and ducks by the "sugar barrel full" to a man up north. After market hunting, John Wallace had a lodge on the island known as "The Salter Gun Club". His most noted client was a baseball player named Babe Ruth.
