Alfred Cheney Johnston was a photographer best known for his portraits of stage actresses and performers in early twentieth-century New York. He served as the house photographer for the Ziegfeld Follies, where he produced images that helped define the public image of the “Ziegfeld Girls” and contributed to the visual culture of Broadway. Johnston’s work, characterized by carefully arranged studio compositions and soft lighting, was widely reproduced in magazines and promotional materials of the period.
