19th century, consisting of (2) skull saws, each with steel blade and shaft and cross-hatched ebony handle, unsigned; contained in a fitted velvet-lined and hinged wooden box with two front latches, labeled "D.S" on the cover, underside, and front edge; with accompanying card stating "A set of rare surgical head saws as suggested and used by / Sir Richard Hayes. Circa 1831. / Catalogued in Library of Congress." The Lot also includes (2) books on head injuries: Louis Bakay's The Treatment of Head Injuries in the Thirty Years' War (1618-1648): Joannis Scultetus and His Age (Springfield, IL: Charles C. Thomas, [1971]. Hardcover in dust jacket.) and E. S. Gurdjian's Head Injury from Antiquity to the Present with Special Reference to Penetrating Head Wounds. (Springfield, IL: Charles C. Box with scattered nicks and scratches, and a crack to cover; staining and light wear to lined interior; tools with expected signs of wear from age and use including rubbing and scratches. The first book with light foxing to page edges; second book with areas of toning and foxing to jacket and text block, the jacket with additional light handling wear.
