Rodney Smith was known for his meticulously-composed photographs that blend portraiture and landscape, drawing on influences from surrealism, literature, and early twentieth-century photography. He studied at the University of Virginia and earned a Master of Divinity from Yale University, beginning his career in the early 1970s and later producing both fine art and commercial work published in outlets such as The New York Times Magazine and Vanity Fair. His photographs are held in collections including the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; the George Eastman Museum; and the International Center of Photography, New York.

Excellent condition; possible slight surface scratch at lower left that is barely-visible and only seen in raking light; not examined out of frame.
