Mid 20th century, silk ground very finely embroidered with a pair of cats under a large rose bush with vivid red and cream colored blooms stretching the length of four panels, with two character signature to the lower right of final panel together with two red seals.

This is Suzhou Embroidery (Su Xiu), one of China’s Four Great Embroideries, celebrated for its subtle colour blending, hair-fine split threads and realistic animal and flower rendering evident in the soft texture of the cats’ fur and layered rose blooms across the screen.

Wear with losses to three of the panels; scattered foxing; separation to some panels from the others.
