Joseph Hunter Crute, Jr. (1930–2014) was an American Civil War historian, author, lecturer, and publisher best known for his works on Confederate military history, including Units of the Confederate States Army (1987) and The Derwent Letters (1985). A graduate of Washington & Lee University, he worked as an English and history teacher before becoming a respected independent historian and author. Crute and his wife, Elizabeth "Betty" Crute, owned and restored historic Derwent Plantation in Virginia, where Robert E. Lee briefly resided after the Civil War before accepting the presidency of Washington College (now Washington and Lee University), which inspired the name of his publishing imprint, Derwent Books.
