A. P. Santhanaraj was a celebrated Modernist painter and influential educator who played a pivotal role in the development of contemporary Indian art. Born in Tamil Nadu, he studied at the Government College of Arts and Crafts in Madras (now Chennai), where he later served as principal, helping to shape generations of artists associated with the renowned Madras School. His paintings are distinguished by their expressive brushwork and vibrant color, often drawing inspiration from Indian culture, spirituality, and the natural world.

Throughout his career, Santhanaraj received numerous honors, including multiple National Awards from the Lalit Kala Akademi, and exhibited his work extensively in India and abroad. His paintings are held in major public and private collections, including the National Gallery of Modern Art, New Delhi.
