By direct descent in the family of Charles Dana Gibson (1867–1944), the celebrated American illustrator and creator of the "Gibson Girl." During his later years, Gibson summered on 700 Acre Island near Islesboro, Maine, where he was an active member of the Tarratine Club and an avid yachtsman. According to the consignor, the Gibson family owned and raced the yacht Diana II, the vessel engraved on this trophy as the winner of the Tarratine Club Twenty Foot Class for the 1935 season. The trophy has remained in the Gibson family for nearly a century, descending through four generations.
