Clem Fulcher (NC, 1886-1963), Curlew

Atlantic, North Carolina, circa 1910, carved and painted wood, copper stake.

Height 18 in. x 13 x 1

Clem Fulcher made some fine silhouette shorebird decoys from the clapboards of old homes. He typically carried these decoys to the marsh in old salt sacks. The birds he shot were carried home in the sacks and the following days he returned for the decoys. This curlew is a rare species for the maker.

Original paint with light gunning wear.
