The Hunter family of Florence, South Carolina comprised four generations of skilled chairmakers who maintained the tradition of making entirely hand-carved and hand-woven husk chairs. What began as a supplement to farm income grew into a regional tradition of notable craftsmanship. The young Archie Hunter was recognized for his skill by crafts authority Allen Eaton in a 1946 U.S. Department of Agriculture survey of rural crafts.
