Rare Antique American Timber Scribe/Race Knife

Circa 1800-1850, hand forged three pronged tool with hinged scoop point, featuring carved serif initials "L x R." This was a tool used by lumbermen and carpenters to inscribe tallies, numerals, etc. to log ends or wooden boards.

4.8 x 1.25 in.

Consignor's note states "Found at Mercer Museum near Philadelphia." This museum was opened in 1916 as a collection of pre-industrial American artifacts, with it's building being completed the same year. The founder's collection began in 1897.

Very good antique condition.
