A Chinese "Hare's Fur" Temmoku Tea Bowl

Song dynasty style, a conical stoneware bowl with slightly flared rim, the interior and exterior are covered in a thick, glossy dark glaze breaking to fine streaked striations in tones of teal-blue and ochre-brown, radiating outward from a pooled center, the glaze thins and pools unevenly toward the foot, leaving the lower body and foot ring unglazed.

This "hare's fur" streaked glaze effect is most closely associated with Jian ware bowls produced at kilns in Jianyang, Fujian province, prized during the Song dynasty (960-1279) for use in tea ceremonies and competitions. The present bowl's glaze palette and body color diverge somewhat from documented Song-period examples.
