20th century, boldly carved from a large mottled green and gray hardstone as a recumbent Buddhist lion, the powerful animal depicted with its head raised and mouth open to reveal carved teeth and tongue, with bulging eyes, broad ears, and a long finely incised mane falling down the neck; the muscular body resting on tucked legs and terminating in a long striated tail, the natural variations and inclusions of the stone incorporated into the carving; presented on a fitted carved hardwood stand.
