Alan Siegel (American, b.1938), Momma and Twins, Figural Memphis Painted Bench

Lot Details & Additional Photographs
Circa 1980, figural carved, stained, and painted Memphis style curvilinear wood settee, appears unmarked.

45 x 66.5 x 20 in.

Collection of Sydney and Frances Lewis, Richmond, Virginia

Born in New York, Siegel studied at Brandeis University, Stanford, and Columbia, and spent time as a Fulbright Scholar in Paris. He initially worked successfully as a painter. In the mid-1960s, feeling unsatisfied with painting and traditional sculpture, he tore apart one of his sculptures to build a chair for his beach house. This bridged the gap between high art and functional objects. His work reflects the playful, boundary-pushing spirit of the Post-Modern and Memphis design movements, turning everyday seating into conversation pieces.

Good estate condition; some paint and surface scratches; notable scratch to middle of seat.
