One of the earliest carpets known is the Fustat Carpet, made between 600-800 AD. in Anatolia or the surrounding area. It features a lion motif that fills the field. The lion has long since been a favored symbol of strength and royalty in Iran, but is also deeply symbolic for Afghanis as an emblem of peace and resilience.
