Alexander Austen was a British painter known primarily for genre scenes, portraits, and domestic interiors. Born in Lambeth, London, he was established as a professional artist by the early 1880s and later lived in Suffolk, Buckinghamshire, and the London area. His paintings frequently depict musicians, craftsmen, card and chess players, and figures in historical costume. Austen also produced portraits, including a copy of John Michael Wright’s portrait of philosopher Thomas Hobbes now held by Hertford College, Oxford. He died in Isleworth, London, in 1924.
