A Moment With Rob Golan
The Very Very Successful Anne Catharine Hoof Green
Learn about the enterprising spirit of Anne Catharine Hoof Green, a Colonial American businesswoman, printer, and publisher, with our Rare Coins & Historical Director, Rob Golan. After the death of her husband, Jonas Green, in 1767, Anne was left with significant debt, a small print shop, and six children to care for. Deciding to take over her late husband's business, Anne earned a name for herself and a living for her family, printing the Maryland Gazette without interruption. Along with newspapers, she printed broadsides and did work for the government. In the course of her government work, Anne was contracted to print bank notes for Colonial Maryland that warn, "'Tis Death to Counterfeit." We are pleased to offer six of her bank notes in our Historic European and American Currencies Auction. This auction opens for live bidding on August 1st at 10:00 am. Pre-bidding is available now.
