Anchoring the Fine Art category of our Important Winter Auction on December 5th were over 30 lots from the personal collection of noted antiques dealer and fine art consultant James H. Craig and his partner Randy S. Johnson.

Jim Craig was a Juilliard-trained violinist who turned his attention to art in the years after his formal musical education. Over the course of his decades-long career Craig started and sold an antiques dealership in Raleigh, North Carolina, and consulted on acquisitions and operations for numerous institutions and private clients, including the White House, The Mint Museum, and The North Carolina Executive Mansion.

In 2007 The Mint Museum mounted an exhibition called “Personal Preferences: Paintings from the Jim Craig and Randy Johnson Collection” that showed 67 of the more than 170 paintings from Craig and Johnson’s collection. A number of the paintings offered in The Important Winter Auction from the Craig and Johnson collection were included in this exhibit, such as Hungry Deer Approaching Near To Human Habitation by William Wallace Gilchrist, Jr. (NY/ME, 1879-1926). Other American art highlights being offered from the collection are The Prospector by Gordon Coutts (CA, 1880-1937); Skating on a Mountain Lake by William Charles Anthony Frerichs (NY, 1829-1905); Sunset, View of the Temple of Venus by George Loring Brown (MA/NH, 1814-1889); and a pair of portraits by Ezra Ames (NY/MA, 1768-1836).
