Discovering the Harvey Collection: Collector Decoys in the Sporting Art Auction
"Philip Harvey, he's been a long-term friend, he's been a mentor of mine, he's co-authored...[Shorebird Decoys of North Carolina] with Kroghie Andresen..."
- Robbie Smith, Sporting Art Director
Explore the extraordinary decoy collection of Philip & Susan Harvey. Coming to market for the first time, this remarkable assemblage features rare and highly desirable makers, including decoys recognized in Shorebird Decoys of North Carolina, by Kroghie Andresen and Philip Harvey, such as a Yellowlegs by John Fulcher and a Beach Robin by Gary Bragg. Each piece from the collection reflects not only the skill of its carver but also the rich history of North Carolina’s sporting traditions.
Our Sporting Art Director Robbie Smith offers insight into what makes these works so significant and compelling. Highlights include an Important Redhead by James Best with exceptional patina and provenance, a Pintail from the Julian Hamilton, Sr. Rig with excellent form and patina by Mitchell Fulcher, and a shorebird by Pharoah "Farrow" Midgett that was previously displayed at the North Carolina Museum of History. Each decoy carries its own story -- connecting craftsmanship and history with connoisseurship.
Philip Harvey, a dedicated outdoorsman, fisherman, and important North Carolinian, had a tremendous impact on the Southeastern decoy collecting community. His collection represents not only a remarkable gathering of rare and important decoys but serves as a testament to a lifetime of scholarship dedicated to documenting the waterfowl hunting heritage of the Southeastern shores.
Explore these works, as well as many others being offered in our Sporting Art Auction, which opens for live-online bidding on Thursday, February 26 at 10:00 am. Pre-bidding is available now.
