Important Decoy Makers to Know and Collect: The Art of Ned Burgess
"This pair here just happens to be published. They are the finest examples that I know of." - Robbie Smith, Sporting Art Director
Join Sporting Art Director, Robbie Smith, as he highlights a few exceptional decoys by celebrated North Carolina carver Ned Burgess. Smith begins with an important pair of Ruddy Ducks, a hen and drake, documented in Gunnin’ Birds by Kroghie Andresen. He then examines a Redhead with a rear-back, or “winded,” head, giving the bird a wonderful sense of animation. Robbie concludes with a Widgeon, notable for its wonderfully raspy surface—a treatment Burgess believed helped reduce glare in the field and prevented the decoys from spooking incoming birds. Together, these lots showcase the distinctive form, surface, and character that define the craftsmanship of Ned Burgess.

Explore these works and many more in our Sporting Art Auction, which opens for live-online bidding on Thursday, August 27 at 10:00 am. Pre-bidding is available now.
