Looking Through The Mind's Eye of Jerry Uelsmann
"Jerry Uelsmann didn’t just take photographs; he constructed them." - Lauren Sanford, Prints, Multiples & Photographs Director, Museum Services
Jerry Uelsmann didn’t just take photographs; he constructed them. Long before Photoshop, he worked in the darkroom using multiple enlargers to combine several negatives into a single print, a process known as photomontage. Unlike straightforward photography, photomontage involves assembling separate photographic elements to create a new, unified image that is not possible in reality. Uelsmann mastered this labor-intensive technique with remarkable precision, producing images that were at once seamless, dream-like, and boldly experimental.
His photograph Untitled (Nude Figure in Stone) exemplifies this approach: a classical nude form fused into a monumental rock face, simultaneously ancient and alive. This tension between the real and the imagined became central to Uelsmann’s photography and was met with international recognition, earning him a Guggenheim Fellowship, a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship, and major retrospectives at institutions such as the Museum of Modern Art and the Art Institute of Chicago.

Yet Uelsmann’s photographic legacy reached far beyond museum walls and art history textbooks. His photomontages also appeared in deeply personal gestures, including the handmade Valentines he mailed to friends and colleagues. These small works featured manipulated photographic imagery with amorous themes, complete with red heart stickers, dedications, and lovingly addressed envelopes. They were playful and technically sophisticated, collapsing the distance between fine art and everyday life. With Valentine’s Day right around the corner, these handmade Valentines feel especially timely.
