Both the Contemporary Art Auction on March 13th and the Important Spring Auction on March 14th achieved strong results, with several lots setting national auction records. Live online bidding in both auctions allowed strong bidder engagement despite the need for social distancing.
Fine Art and Fine Art Prints led results: Orion by Linden Frederick (ME, b. 1953) sold for $17,500, the highest hammer price at auction for a work by the artist; Jimmy Carter II, a screen print by Andy Warhol (1928-1987), sold for $12,500, the highest price achieved at auction for an impression of the work; Place, an oil painting by Edouard Cortes (French, 1884-1969) sold for $30,000 - $5,000 over its high estimate. Among other notable lots were a Platinum and 18KT Gold Diamond Solitaire Ring that sold for $13,000 and a Rare North Carolina Chippendale Sulfur Inlaid Walnut Tall Case Clock that sold for $24,000 - over twice its high estimate. The weekend’s auctions brought over $1.5 million in total for approximately 570 lots across the two auctions. Hammer prices exclude buyer’s premium.
