More Reasons to Celebrate

As I’ve previously shared, my belief is that every bottle of wine has a unique story to tell. By extension, I also believe that every bottle of wine has its perfect occasion. So let’s talk about the reasons we drink wine, or should I say the moments that inspire us to open particular bottles.

Some days we just want something delicious to drink that doesn’t require too much thought - a bottle that enhances the current moment without needing to be the center of attention. The kind of wine you open to enjoy with a friend you haven’t seen in a long time. There will be lots of catching up to do and news to share, and the wine is not the focus, but it is still a special occasion. The ideal, eminently drinkable bottle will get the ball rolling and the conversation flowing, then allow the easy pleasure of two friends catching up to take over the spotlight.

On another day, you might need the perfect bottle for a spontaneous celebration - a promotion at work, maybe, or just a really excellent deal on some thick-cut pork chops at the local butcher. It’s an excuse to open a bottle that’s too fancy for everyday drinking but is just right to elevate a good night into a great one. A reason to open that wine you’ve been eyeing regularly in your cellar but that you promised you’d save for the right moment. This is that moment!

Today I have two wines for you - one to fit each of these occasions. Both are truly excellent, made by small producers going above and beyond to bring the best from their unique terroir. I’m a firm believer in finding more mundane moments of celebration in our lives, and I believe that the right wine can make the difference between an ordinary evening and a night we remember fondly for years!

2021 Stargazer Single Vineyard Riesling (Tasmania) $45

Juicy and fruity, exploding with candied green apple, white flowers, and citrus. High acid, perfectly balanced by a hint of residual sugar and a long, rich finish. This is a truly quaffable wine to drink when you just want something delicious on a warm summer day. Food pairing optional, but a spicy Thai curry would be a match made in heaven.

2018 Cayuse Armada Vineyard Syrah (Walla Walla Valley) $147

Big, savory, and mineral with sweet dark fruits, a hint of spice, and elegant, ripe tannins. This is a wine to savor with someone you love. Pour your first glass, take your time, and watch how the wine evolves and unfolds over the course of the evening. A perfect bottle to add an extra touch of luxury to an already special moment.
