To me, they are both classic and excellent, and both the type of bottle that can help to round out your cellar beautifully. Wines that your wine collecting friends likely already know and love, and that your friends who know nothing about wine will be delighted to learn about and enjoy.

NV Veuve Clicquot Yellow Label Champagne $73

Veuve Clicquot is one of those wines that needs little introduction. The classic Yellow Label is a timeless blend of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Pinot Meunier, always aged 3 years in the bottle before release. It’s non-vintage, recreated every year from a collection of Veuve Clicquot's priceless reserve wines. This is a bottle to keep in your cellar because it’s the paragon of classic and exceptional bubbly at a price point that makes great champagne feel accessible as more than a once-a-year indulgence. 2019 Alvaro Palacios Finca Dofi (Priorat) $105

Alvaro Palacios’ Finca Dofi may require a little more context than Veuve Clicquot, but in my opinion it is no less outstanding and definitive. If your cellar is a little thin in the Spanish wine department, this bottle will make the perfect addition. The 2019 Finca Dofi exemplifies the excellence of modern Spanish wine, and is from a producer who helped to revolutionize the country’s winemaking in the late 1980s. Alvaro Palacios played an integral role in putting the region of Priorat on the map when he founded his winery with the original Finca Dofi vineyard in 1990.

This single vineyard wine, made with a blend of 87% Garnacha and 12% Cariñena (plus 1% white grapes varieties), received 97 points from Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate who said, “It's classy, elegant and fresh with very clean aromas and flavors, not lacking concentration or power. There is superb definition and purity here; it has to be the finest and most elegant Dofí to date.” The 2019 Finca Dofi is very drinkable now, but will also age beautifully for years to come, making it a superb choice to add to your collection today.
