It feels like I was just here, writing to you about my favorite Thanksgiving wines… Now we’re somehow barreling towards the end of the year, with Christmas only a week away and New Year’s Eve right around the corner. I am delighted to have one more chance to sneak into your inbox before 2023 comes to a close - an opportunity to point out a few more bottles that I think will take your holiday celebrations to that over-the-top delicious, delightful, and highly memorable place. Whether you’re looking for the perfect complement to an upcoming feast, or a last-minute gift for the wine-lover in your life, I think you’ll find something great among the trio below.

2018 Chateau Olivier Blanc, Pessac-Leognan $57

A classic white Bordeaux blend of 75% Sauvignon Blanc and 25% Semillon. Energetic and juicy with ripe stone fruit, bitter citrus zest, and tart pineapple melding with a hint of oaky spice and a pleasantly stony, mineral finish. Light enough to pair with oysters or crab salad, but full enough to stand up to chicken, pork, or something rich, creamy, and dotted with smoky bacon.

2019 Mayacamas Cabernet Sauvignon $193

A classic California name - Mayacamas was founded in 1889 and consistently produces some of the most iconic and enduring wines on the West Coast. This Cabernet Sauvignon, from Mt. Veeder in Napa Valley, is medium-plus in body with plenty of complexity and liveliness to be drinkable now through 2045. Perfectly balanced between the up-front punch of ripe berry fruit and a long savory, spicy finish with pleasantly grippy tannins.

1977 H.M. Borges Madeira Boal $296

I can’t think of a more perfect bottle to pull out as a special treat at the end of a night spent eating, drinking, and celebrating the season with friends and family. Dark and rich with notes of roasted coffee, caramel, dates, and golden raisins, balanced by still-vibrant acidity. Open this vintage Madeira to enjoy with some hard cheese and that fruit cake that somehow always appears around this time of year. If you don’t finish the bottle (unlikely…), it will stay delicious and drinkable pretty much, well, forever!
