Dreaming of Spring
Picnic in a Bottle
The calendar reads, “March,” the daffodils are blooming – though not quite here, spring looms as warm light at the end of a long tunnel. This time of year always drags and teases a bit as the fickle North Carolina weather metes out the remnants of winter. I’m sure I’m not alone in pining for warm, breezy days when I can pack away my winter sweaters until next year. What better time, then, to project ourselves forward to sunny picnic weather?

I have two wines for you today that make me think of an idyllic afternoon with friends in a flower-covered meadow. Granted, my daily life doesn’t generally lend itself to discovering flower-covered meadows, but at least there is wine to enjoy that evokes the sentiment of fresh spring flowers, puddles of warm, honeyed sunlight, and the pleasure of sharing a slow afternoon with good company.
NV Bollinger 'Special Cuvee' $79

An iconic producer and an iconic wine. The Bollinger Special Cuvee is non-vintage Champagne of the highest quality - 85% of the grapes used are sourced from Grand Cru and Premier Cru vineyards. With a higher percentage (60%) of Pinot Noir, Bollinger Special Cuvee has a depth and complexity that makes it ideal to both drink on its own or pair with a full array of cheeses, cured meats, and light appetizers (picnic food, anyone?). Look out for notes of ripe peaches and pears, spiced apple compote, and toasty brioche.

2016 Oremus Tokaji Aszu, 5 Puttonyos (500ml) $81

Some of you might have stopped reading as soon as you realized I’m recommending a sweet wine here. I hope the rest will bear with me as I earnestly declare that dessert wine’s less-than-stellar reputation is completely undeserved. This Oremus Tokaji, produced by famed Spanish house, Vega Sicilia, is truly a warm, sunny day in a bottle. Like many botrytized wines, it bursts from the glass with notes of honey, apricot, orange blossom, and dried fruit. Incredibly complex and vibrant, with a tantalizing acidity to balance its sweetness, it is a surefire way to delight your friends at the end of your next dinner party (or picnic!).
