Summer Wines
Summer Doldrums
I must admit that, despite its charms, summer is far from my favorite season. The heat and humidity get to me, and I quickly start longing for the crisp, cool first days of fall. That being said, I always try to find ways to make the most of my summers - I know that leisurely days spent swimming and picnicking at the lake are fleeting. So in the midst of these late July summer doldrums, I’m proposing that we all plan one of those “seize the moment” days. Whatever your favorite way to enjoy everything July has to offer, it’s time to just do it! Of course, whatever your day looks like, it’s unlikely to be complete without the makings of a gorgeous outdoor meal - gooey cheese, hard salami, crusty bread, some olives or pickles, and of course a bottle or two of wine. Below, I’m recommending a pair that complement this time of year impeccably - they are light, fresh, supremely drinkable, and - dare I say - a little bit trendy, too.

2021 Vigna Lenuzza ‘Indigenously’ Malvasia $23

A ‘natural’ wine for people who don’t care about natural wine. This light, clean Malvasia is made in Friuli with certified organic grapes from 60+ year-old vines. The juice gets fifteen days of skin contact, which adds just a touch of extra color and complexity without truly veering into “orange wine” territory. The nose has a pleasant touch of funk, quickly followed by lovely notes of dried mango, ripe peach, and wild herbs. The palate is fresh and inviting, with undercurrents of apricot and honey. An ideal wine to be enjoyed very cold with some cheese and meat on a very hot day.

2021 Sandlands Trousseau $31

Sandlands, based in Sonoma County, has a bit of a cult-following these days, meaning it’s pretty miraculous that we still have a couple bottles of this tiny-production wine in stock. Tegan Passalacqua, former head winemaker/vineyard manager at Turley Wine Cellars, focuses on forgotten, classic California varietals. This Trousseau is a gorgeous example of just how good those varietals can be - bursting with pure, fresh wild fruit and punchy acidity, mellowed by a savory complexity and balanced by delicate floral notes. Another perfect bottle for enjoying outside on a hot summer day - especially if you do as I would and serve it slightly chilled.
