The Little Things
It’s January - another holiday season has somehow come and gone. Ahead is the cold, dark slog through what always feels to me like the longest month of the year, with spring still just a far-off dream. Let us, therefore, find small and simple pleasures where we can – perhaps a new podcast with a full back-catalog to binge (I’m currently engrossed in Tooth & Claw), the unmistakable, delightful aroma of sauteeing garlic and onions at the start of a long cooking project, or a slow perusal of your favorite wine shop for the perfect bottle to cheer up a dreary Sunday night.

Speaking of… have you browsed our shelves recently? I would love, of course, to see you in person, but if you’d prefer not to leave the comfort (and warmth) of your own home, our virtual shelves are also eagerly awaiting your visit. The subject of how to categorize a wine collection could easily be its own newsletter, but suffice to say that I do my best to keep our website as user-friendly as possible. That means a straightforward and neatly organized catalog for you to browse, as well as a search feature to assist if you’re looking for anything in particular. And if, in the end, you just want someone to hand you a couple bottles for the aforementioned dreary Sunday night, here are my two picks for right now.

2022 Luis Perez 'El Muelle de Olaso' $21

Made from 100% Palomino Fino, a grape traditionally used in the production of Sherry. Unlike sherry, though, this wine spends only a few months under flor and is then bottled while still containing a lively freshness and bright acidity, backed by a wonderful nutty complexity and notes of round tropical fruit. Think of it as your average weekday white wine’s more mature and interesting older cousin. I love it and I bet you will, too.

2022 Yohan Lardy Moulin a Vent '1903' $36

Multiple reviewers have described this wine as the closest Beaujolais can get to being Cru Burgundy. It is 100% Gamay, but with a depth and intensity that could easily fool you into thinking you’re drinking something much more prestigious (and expensive). Rich, ripe, and velvety, with bright red fruits, gorgeous floral aromatics, and a wonderful thirst-quenching acidity. Another one for the “just plain yummy” list!
